The Dance of Death with Peter Greenaway

Several months ago I received a request to speak with European director Peter Greenaway on Skype.  My first reaction was alarm then mild nausea as I imagined the many, many scenarios of how I could make a fool of myself in front of someone whom I admire.  Mr Greenaway is known for a variety of movies such as The cook, the thief, his wife & her lover starring Helen Mirren, The Pillow Book with Ewan McGregor, Drowning by Numbers and dozens more.  He is also an author and painter.  I am a.. well .. anonymous cartoon character in a virtual world... nice to meet you Mr Greenaway.
When we spoke on Skype I actually forgot we were talking for a bit as he is an orator of the traditional sense, full of narration and information quite spellbinding. I had to prod myself to at least attempt to make interesting conversation.  I don't recall what I said, which is clearly a defense mechanism instigated by my brain to protect me from embarrassment.  Thank you brain I own you one.  I probably said, during a pause, that I liked orange juice.  I just don't recall.
Anyway, Mr Greenaway is fond of my machinima and asked me to create five for an installation work to be shown in Basel Switzerland this weekend.  If you happen to be in that area then do go by and take some photos.  The project is called Danse Macabre or the Dance of Death and it is connected to a church mural that was destroyed during WW2.  The age old concept is, that regardless of our station in life, whether that be King, Whore, Priest or Beggar we are all equal in death.  The ancient depictions of this idea often shows a skeleton gently leading various people off to their demise.  Skeletons today are rather loaded images and have become quite sinister, yet I don't particularly see them that way.   For this artwork I was asked to create five machinima depicting characters from this imagery.  They need not have been connected to one another but I chose to create a narrative linking all five characters together.  I have included my quick sketches which I sent to Peter for approval.  I modernized some of the traditional characters and chose the Painter, Doctor (computer repairman), The Herald (reporter), Child and Mother.

The real life installation takes place in a church graveyard.  As guests walk through the artwork sensors detect them and when they enter a certain radius, a projector plays a machinima onto a gravestone.  An additional challenge within the project was that the film had to fit the gravestones themselves.  So that meant filming in 9:16 rather than widescreen 16:9.  That meant physically turning my monitor on its side so that it was long and tall, then changing its orientation from landscape to horizontal.  Unfortunately YouTube won't show movies in that orientation without adding two black bars on either side or I would have uploaded it for you to see.  I may figure out a way but for now here are a few images taken from the scenes.

I am going to receive some images from the installation and opening in a few weeks or so and will do a second post talking about the artists involved and then I can include some photos of the event so that it makes more sense.  I was sent the invite and information in a PDF file which sadly prevents me from copying then pasting the information which I can then Google translate.  That Google translation would naturally be completely incorrect but closer than what I am offering which is a screen capture of the pertinent information.

My blog info tells me that I have readers from Switzerland so if you have the opportunity please go and let me know what you think of the installation.

The Dance of Death - Vernissage TV clip

My friend Andrea Numanox linked me to this video created at the opening last week of the Dance of Death with Peter Greenaway.  I am pleased to see my own work shown a few times in the video which is always nice.  Nothing worse than being part of something where there is no actual footage of your work anywhere.  That happened to me for the World Expo in Shanghai when I had several machinima on screens there, all the photographs I could find online that people took of the Madrid pavilion always had somebody elses machinima playing.  It then turns into a "trust me I was in it... no I can't show you my work that was there... but really I was"  and so on.  Ok to be honest my main reason for wanting the proof is to use as a visual aid for my parents who still don't quite understand what a virtual world is.  I mean it has only been six years I know, perhaps I am moving too fast but still.  I will spend an hour explaining it to my Dad and leave thinking he finally understands it, then the next time I visit it is like starting all over again.  "Virtual whatsa?" he says.  In fact it is worse than that.  They take their half formed understanding of what I do to their friends and try to explain it.. thus turning it into something completely new and bizarre, well more bizarre.  Or their friends convince them I am playing The Sims.  "No Mom and Dad it is not the game where you play house and if you leave your newspaper on the counter for 2 minutes it starts to get stink lines"  They are very polite about it though, they always nod encouragingly to me while sipping their tea.  Anyway, the video is from an interesting site called Vernissage TV

In my last post I talked a bit about when I spoke to Mr Greenaway on skype and how he is very much a classical orator in the way he speaks.  I am glad that this video showed his address to the crowd at the opening so you know what I was talking about.  It really did feel like I was watching a TV show on the History Channel when we talked on skype.  What I found really amazing about the project is the diversity of styles present.  So many really talented people involved and all using quite varied mediums.  Hopefully I can get more footage of the other artists and post it here.  I know Rose Borchovski also has a work in it but not sure which is hers.

Uemeu testing

Light Waves dancer at Black Swan
I recently received an invite to try beta testing a creation called Uemeu.  It is described as a sandbox application in Unity 3D and conceived by ex-second lifers Edgeware Marker (Language Lab), LittleToe Bartlett and someone described as "a certain SL artist who-shall-not-be-named" which would be Light Waves / Starax who is one of the early Second Life artists (Greenies, Black Swan) and also one of the biggest hermits ever, he makes Elvis (if he is still alive!) seem like Toronto's crack smoking Mayor Rob Ford in a Christmas light string bikini.   Actually if you are interested in learning about early Second Life people and what it was like ten years ago, DrFran Babcock does a fun interview series called the oldbie project for the SLnewser.  http://slnewser.blogspot.ca/2013/11/the-oldbie-project-pie-psaltery.html  I just read it not long ago and it was a fun interview.

Anyway, they have been working on Uemeu the past year and the project went into alpha on Desura (interesting) in July and has been under the direction of programmer Jeremy Hindle (Mentioum).

I am going to paste what was sent to me.  It should be remembered that it is quite early yet and right now they are just looking for a few creatives to see what they can achieve with it. I have signed up but not sure when I will be able to really spend lots of time testing it out.

We are currently interested in builders, artists and game creators who would like to try out our game.

What it can do:

Build environments and objects with an ever-expanding library of shapes, terrains and textures
Animate objects and create games without scripting
Build and play in single or multiplayer mode
    and much more to come...

You're on this list because you are a visionary, early adopter, tinkerer or explorer. I'm hoping you'll find Uemeu intriguing enough to help build a community that will shape the future of this game. We will be looking for people to create games and environments with Uemeu that will be shared with the world.

You can  register at our website: http://uemeu.com/#/ and download the free trial version. If you like the way it works, you can become part of the alpha-funding team and purchase the full game on Desura. http://www.desura.com/games/uemeu Purchasing this license will entitle you to all future updates of Uemeu (which happens about every two weeks).

You can see some of the things being made in Uemeu here: http://uemeu-official.deviantart.com/gallery/

I am happy to set up personal multiplayer sessions or answer any of your questions via email. Direct feedback about the game can be sent to support@uemeu.com. What I'm really hoping for is a few talented people to come in and prove that this application can make amazing things.

Dance of Death machinima

The exceptionally talented Elmer Leupen was kind enough to convert my machinima for the Dance of Death and send it to me last week, here it is above.

Image from the Huffington Post
Unfortunately I have been unable to find the other artists creations who had worked outside SL, but I do have Rose Borchovski's wonderful machinima from the project.  I liked the idea by Rose to incorporate her Susa Bubble story into the narrative of the Dance of Death.  I often do the same within my own narratives where characters overlap in some cases.  Ideally, characters such as Roses will, over time, become iconic to the degree that they can be smaller elements within a larger project, such as the Dance of Death, but if they contain enough depth themselves they will instead become main characters who are hosting the project rather than vice versa.  Not sure if I explained that well.  So imagine if I were to make more narratives with the Rabbicorn,  The Daughter of Gears, Anna or Imogen perhaps.  If I created chapter upon chapter of depth to some of those characters, then if they were to make an appearance within another project such as the Dance of Death, then perhaps their depth of character or history would overpower the other newer and more surface narratives which share the project, thus creating a situation where they are not "guests" within a larger project but rather they could be dominant instead, with everything else being the "guest".  If they have a past narrative history as well as potentially a future one, then the project they make an appearance in would be simply a marker along their path.  Anyway, I don't think I explained that well but I think it is an interesting idea.  Many of you are likely familiar with the Susa Bubble story, but if not you can find the portion called Inevitability of Fate at Rose's sim called Two fish.  http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Cariacou/137/191/231
And below you will find her lovely machinima.

Last night was the first snow storm in Toronto and it was kind of early in the season.  I went out gleefully and took some pictures as I have not yet begun to despise winter yet.  I have a confession though, something to get off my mind.  I feel a touch guilty and partially responsible, so this is just between us.
As I was taking these photos out in the countryside, I decided, after a while, that it was time to turn around and go home.  I didn't want to do a U turn on one of these snowy country roads.. I mean seriously look at the pictures, I could go in the ditch and my god that would be horrible.  So as I was searching for a way to turn around I came across this lovely house and decided I would turn around in their front driveway.  Much more sensible right?  Well I turned in to the driveway and noticed it was on a bit of a hill going down.  Then I began to question whether I was actually on their driveway or instead in their front yard.  It was hard to tell since it was completely pristine white snow and it all looked the same.  Things were still fine at this point, but then my wheels began to spin in place.  If I had kept my cool things may have still turned out ok, however, I got a bit alarmed at the thought of getting stuck there in someones front yard, rather than driveway, and perhaps I used a little bit too much acceleration.  Well far too much acceleration.  I saw dirt start to fly out over the beautiful white snow and then panicked a bit and began to slide around all over their front yard.
At this point I guess I had only made a half dozen or so big muddy ruts in their lawn, but then I kind of slowly slid over to this white mound, then flowers began to shoot out behind the car when I accelerated.  So I stopped and looked to the front windows of the house dreading to see if anyone observed the horrible things I was doing to their lawn and flower bed.  I saw no face showing complete horror in the window, so I did what any rational person would do in such a situation, which was to continue trying what had already failed miserably for ten minutes.  I eventually found the driveway and was able to escape to the road
again.  I briefly considered knocking on the door and telling them I had driven over... no.. murdered their front yard and garden and that I was sorry, but I chose rather to sneak away and whisper Merry Christmas instead.
Anyway, so yes I am a horrible person and I did a terrible thing today.  Someone is going to see that lawn and go WTF!  When I got home I logged into Second Life and there was a message saying Merry Christmas and a gift sent to me from the delightful scripter Desdemona Enfield.  After destroying that persons front yard I was fairly certain that Santa would not be bringing me any gifts this year so I was very pleased to receive this present before my lawn exploits became known to Mr Clause.  I took out the gift and you know,  nothing says Merry Christmas like a present which  demonstrates the movement of Comet ISON through the solar system.  Just teasing Des, but as it may be visible from the northern hemisphere in December, and since it is a pretty impressive feat of math and physics I wanted to share it with everyone.  You can get your very own free one here.. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Pomponio/188/154/59

Daughter of Gears painting

I wanted to share a new work I just finished the other day.  It is inspired by my Second Life character called The Daughter of Gears whose story you can find here.

It is a painting made up of oil paint, pen and ink as well as encaustic (beeswax).  It is 24 inches by 30 inches and will be for sale in a bit after I have left it on my wall for a week or two.  If you are interested just let me know.

I have also included a fun little video somebody made which incorporates a bunch of historical artworks.

2013 Avi Choice Awards and The Oldbie project

If you are wondering why foam hands and motion capture twerking animations are selling briskly on marketplace then wonder no more!  It is because the Avi Choice Awards are coming up.  The voting period ends on Dec. 13th and the awards show will take place at the Xmas Expo 2013 regions on Dec. 15th @ 3pm SLT.

The show will be televised on Aview TV and broadcast on T1 Radio.
For more information about the Avi Choice Awards, visit the website at avichoiceawards.com   I am a wee bit late posting this as the final day is tomorrow to vote.  I am excited to say that I was nominated in four categories.  Favorite Videographer.. umm machinimatographer, Favorite poet/spoken word performer/actor, Favorite Art Gallery for Immersiva and Favorite Artist.  So yay that is kind of fun.  Looking at the list of people and categories made me realize that I need to get out more.  I am, however, feverishly building a foam hand just in case I do win something.

Another thing I wanted to mention was a great series of posts done by DrFran Babcock called The Oldbie project.  I like to read about how sl has evolved over the decade or so since its inception and these interviews are done with the very early residents.  Often they will mention little tidbits of how it used to be.. like for example the latest interview is with Hikaru Yamamoto and she talks about how teleports used to cost money and at one time there was a Linden Alien who used to roam sl abducting people.   Anyway have a read if you enjoy that as well.

So here is the voting results for the Avi choice awards that happened the other day.  The name in red is the winner with the most votes while the person just above them in the list had the second most votes and so on.  For example,  Blake Hamilton won the Favorite DJ with Sadist Sinister getting the second most votes etc.  These are the top five but each category may have had 20 or more people nominated.  The event was held over four sims and several hundred also watched it on a virtual world TV station.  We are a funny bunch aren't we?  I have realized from reading the list that I have to get out more.  And for some categories I was kind of perplexed on how some people were missing.. but that is the inevitable controversy a list of anything creates.  This is a handy resource though as I now know where to go shopping or who to see live. That is of course if I didn't always look the same or spend all my time building things.

Christmas wishes

I would like to wish everyone happy holidays!  It is Christmas eve and no doubt Santa has been forced to rent a second sleigh in order to bring me all my gifts.

I have a few Christmas wishes for the new year.  The first wish is that Linden Lab will stop pretending their lawyers are looking at new wording for the TOS which many of the creative residents found so appalling.   A few months back they said their Lawyers were looking into adjusting the wording in response to actions from numerous community groups like the United Content Creators of Second Life group.  So with all this time passing, and our IP lawyers suggesting they need only change a few words to satisfy the community, it would appear the situation is either they wish to let so much time pass that the burning anger that the community was running on slowly dissipated to quiet grumbling.  They can live with quiet grumbling.. I mean their whole history is about quiet grumbling.  If that is not their strategy then my wish would be that they fire their Lawyers who are supposed to be working on it.  They are clearly being taken advantage of if the Layers are suggesting they need more time than two months to change a few words.

Another wish would be for the current Second Life viewer to be scrapped with the Firestorm team being hired to create their default viewers.  Either that or start adding windlights or functionality similar to phototools etc.  They can have all the windlights I have made for free they merely have to ask.  Actually they don't have to ask, they already own them, so please just include them.. it will take two seconds.  Their viewer is improved graphically, but they really need to unify the experience.  For example, my new build relies specifically on a Firestorm windlight/sky which the Second Life viewer doesn't possess.  You can set the sim to force a windlight which would be great .. if it worked regularly.  Essentially what this means is that when my new build opens only Firestorm viewers will see it properly, unless the forced windlight works which it may not.  I have never relied on a windlight before like I will for this new build, so if it doesn't work for half the visitors then the experience will be vastly reduced and very discouraging.

Another wish would be for tier to go down some.  It is getting harder and harder to justify spending $300 a month on a virtual space.  As I said I am working on a new story for Immersiva and by the time it comes out next month it will have cost me $900 to build due to tier.  They need to make it easier for people who devellop content that directly improves their product and peoples enjoyment of it, to be able to continue to work there.  What about having tier drop yearly the longer you have owned a sim?  So dropping $50 a year provided you have maintained payment.  For example, if you have owned a sim for three years you would be instead be paying $150 a month.  It would encourage retention of regions and make people happy!

It is not all bad though, Linden Lab have made some wonderful improvements to Second Life this year ranging from improved rez time to overall stability.  When I first came to Second Life it would often be down for half the day on Wednesdays as they tried to implement new things.  They have really improved the product over time and their programmers certainly deserve credit for that.   It is true that I am annoyed with you right now Linden Lab, I find there are too many apologists defending your actions, the most disturbing being those few artists with no sense of self worth. It was nice to see many in the community, both bloggers and residents, stand up and challenge Linden Lab on their TOS, hopefully that will continue and Linden Lab realizes they can not just avoid the topic.

Really though my main wish is that by this time next year my growing disenchantment with Linden Lab will have dissipated with me realizing that it was all a misunderstanding.  Hopefully they have a grand plan which will make everyone happy, but have been forced to keep it secret, which is quite plausible.  That would be great don't you think?

Anyway, Merry Christmas!

suspect line up
I woke up today to a rather ominous message sent to me by Linden Lab.  In it they informed me that my account had been put on hold due to "suspicious behaviour".   The suspicious behaviour was somebody stealing all my money!  Joke was on them though as I had already been robbed numerous times by stores before Christmas.  A word of advice to burglers... rob before Christmas as it is likely much more lucrative.  Seriously though my first thoughts were "how long is this going to take to get resolved?" my second thought was completely unrelated so I wont bother repeating it here.  So I went in to the Linden police station to see if I could identify the culprit by picking them out from a suspect line up behind a one way mirror.  Sadly I lagged bad at that moment and walked through the one way glass and they all saw me.   I didn't recognize any of the shapes but I didn't like the look of the cube.. seemed a bit two faced to me.  I have to say though that Linden Lab fixed it in a matter of hours.  I was pretty impressed and felt a wee bit guilty for my snarky post about them the other day.  Now I have to figure out what this means.  A friend of mine says I have to reformat my entire computer in case they have a keylogger on my computer now.  That would be pretty horrible and tons of work.  Someone else said my nortons program should be sufficient to tell me if I need to be worried.  I am changing all my passwords now but I guess if they have a keylogger that wont do much.  If anyone has any suggestions please let me know in the comments!

I got a message the other day from a friend who is also the owner of the sim where my shop is/was located.  His account was locked out as he owed Linden Lab money I expect.  Kind of reminds me of my previous patron named Dusan Writer who gave me Immersiva six years ago.  He was also locked out and one day Immersiva suddenly was gone when I logged in.  That was kind of disturbing as you can imagine.  Was like when my car was towed once and I stood around all confused thinking "I am sure I parked here.."  I knew it wasn't stolen because I leave the door and glove box open so people don't damage my car trying to break into it.  The can just have a quick look to see there is nothing worth stealing.
Anyway, I digress.  What was kind of shocking when Immersiva disappeared was that a blogger named Hamlet Au suggested I do a crowd funder to see if people would donate to bring Immersiva back.  I was resistant to the idea because it kind of felt like begging to me as well as I had a fear that nobody would donate and it would just be kind of humiliating.  I was once auctioned in high school for charity with the idea that you would be somebodies servant for a day.  Fortunately I worked out ahead of time for a friend to buy me if there were no bids.  Turns out he eventually won the bid and I had to pay him back.  So I bought myself.  I was pretty annoyed with him for raising the bids when he was using my money and could have let someone else win.  Anyway, I set up a crowd funder for Immersiva and set it to last two months to raise a goal of $6,000 US dollars for tier for two years or so.  I was surprised to see the goal reached in a matter of hours on the first day.  That was pretty rewarding.
So yesterday I told my group the shop would be closing and lots of people came by and we chatted.  I procrastinated in taking a copy of the shop and well... I never actually got around to it and now the regions are deleted.  What is kind of cool for you though, if you bought things yesterday, is that for some of those works I didn't have a copy of them at all.  I am bad that way sometimes.  So yay you may have some works that are particularly rare now.

New Media Grant... two

I have a bunch of exciting announcements to make over the next little while but they can wait because I have just received a letter in the mail from the Canadian Government saying that I have been awarded a second grant based off of the artwork which I create here in virtual worlds.  I originally received a grant a few years ago to create the build and machinima for Standby which I will post below.  They have doubled this grant and I am super happy.  There were just 16 grants awarded and I am really proud of the OAC for recognizing the value and nature of this frontier form of artwork and supporting it.  Much of the world is unable or unwilling to recognize that virtual art and its artists are currently laying the groundwork for what will eventually be a medium standing equal alongside traditional art forms such as sculpture, painting, cinema and photography.

This new grant will support, among other things, the creation of a machinima for Imogen and the Pigeons which recently closed on Immersiva.  Much of the application focused on the above previously created machinima for Standby as well as the single room within Imogen and the Pigeons that I filmed called Juniper (below).   I am very happy and over the next little while I will post at least four other big things on the horizon that I am excited about.

The Singularity of Kumiko
On February 14th 2014 my new immersive work will open on Immersiva.  There are, as usual, some specific settings which need to be set up for this artwork.  The difference this time being that the settings are essential for the story to work properly.  At the entrance are some fairly simple things to do which should take perhaps five minutes.  I have directions for Singularity viewer and the default SL viewer 3, but the best viewer to use is Firestorm as it has the most effective windlight and shadow settings available.

This artwork will use some features in a unique way allowing for a quite different experience which, sadly, is fairly demanding on your computer.  I have tested extensively and have found that most are able to run, while experiencing minimal lag, the artwork on mid range computers.  To help keep lag minimized I will cap the avatar limit on Immersiva to 10-15.  As with Imogen and the Pigeons, I am attempting to look at the virtual medium and determine what is unique about it over other mediums such as painting, sculpture and cinema. Then I work towards using those strengths to create an immersive experience that is specific to a multi user environment.  Some things that can help with the immersion is if you are able to turn the lights down low in the room as you explore, as well as turn up the ambient volume.  Essentially you will need a special windlight, shadows enabled and a headlamp. I should also mention that while it is a love story of sorts... it also possesses an element of danger so you will need to be a careful.  The artwork is open ended and you may feel lost at certain points, but that sense of anxiety is essential to the narrative.

I hope you will enjoy it.

There are a few things to talk about for this post.  First is that the Singularity of Kumiko has been open a week now and I am happy with the turn out so far.  It is capped at 15 avatars but still getting upwards of 600 visitors a day which is more than I had expected.  Imogen and the Pigeons was getting thousands a day but there was a higher avatar cap of 30 I believe.  There have been some insightful posts such as http://laskyaclaren.wordpress.com/2014/02/09/the-singularity-of-bryn-oh/ and https://modemworld.wordpress.com/2014/02/14/upon-reaching-a-singularity/ as well as the inevitable complaints.  Generally those are coming from the odd photographer who feel it is too dark or they get killed by Mr Zippers while composing a shot.  My response to them is that I do not make make artwork for pictures.  There are plenty of pretty sims built for that purpose.  It is actually pretty arrogant to assume I would adjust my artwork to fascilitate your hobby, which reminds me of a comment made for Imogen and the Pigeons when it opened last year.  Someone said to me that they "Didn't want to do work in order to see art".  There is this belief, by some, that art should be offered with eyes lowered on a silver platter.  Some are accustomed to overly nice Wallmart greeters or restaurants whose servers are constantly asking how the food is, or should you take a sip of water they are magically at your shoulder refilling your glass with three drops.  I am thinking locally of a restaurant called the Mardarin but I am sure this strategy of overly decadent treatment exists everywhere.  I find it a bit debasing and it makes me uncomfortable, but I understand the intention of the restaurant, Wallmart or whatever to try to make the guest feel like Royalty.  Its a type of fantasy.  Art will, hopefully, never decline to that level.  I spent four months building the Singularity of Kumiko, I charge exactly 0L to see it.  If you can't spend five minutes setting up the windlight then seriously, go away it is not for you.  I have actually only received a handful of complaints like that but still it is annoying.  Rant over.
I really wish I was still living in Italy at the moment as there is a great show to see.  It is at http://www.dorothycircusgallery.it/ and has the work of Ray Caesar and Anita Kunz.  Anitas work is great and Ray Ceasar is one of my favorites so if you happen to live in either Rome or Torino then have a look and tell me if it was completely awesome and how much his work sells for there!

Also thank you Hope Leissa for buying  me at auction for 47,000 Linden in support of the Feed a Smile charity.  Very generous of you.

Dasha Hara machinima for BAK

I have been pretty busy lately and strangely have forgotten to mention that I was commissioned to create a music video for a band named BAK which I completed a few months ago.  I enjoyed working with the band as they were pretty hands off for the most part, letting me interpret their music as a narrative.
My story is based around a girl who drops her scissors onto the grass when startled during a lightning storm.  The scissors land in the soil, one blade piercing it, creating an almost religious symbol or icon which draws forth an Emperor Moth to perch upon it.  From there other insects are slowly drawn to the mysterious artifact and soon  begin to worship the symbol and its moth.  Soon they begin to fight amongst themselves.  The girl looks down upon the tiny world at her feet and is dismayed to see what her scissors have caused.  A seemingly innocent tool taken and then distorted into something quite different.  After seeing how they have changed, she ponders for a while, then eradicates them.  A simple girl transformed into a  Goddess for a little world of insects who come to embrace her soul.  Or ... rather... her sole.

"Art is an immortal statement of the mortal" says Ron Elstad.  That sounds lovely but I don't really agree with it, but then, I have searched every pot hole on my street, from the shallow to the deep, and not once have I found even a single gram of marijuana in them.  A tragic misnomer.
My blog is a fragile record of my art work in a fragile virtual world and as such I will today, a day after my 7th year as Bryn Oh in Second Life, begin cataloging my new work The Singularity of Kumiko and relate how it connects to Imogen and the Pigeons, my previous work shown on my virtual land named Immersiva.  There are several posts starting with that link which explain who Imogen was and act as a walk through of the previous story from which The Singularity of Kumiko is a prequel.  My focus or goal in using virtual worlds for my art has always been to create an artwork which is defined by the experience of being immersed.  As an oil painter I have always been accustomed to working on a 2D surface that reflects a moment in time, a snapshot that we stand back from and observe at a distance of five feet or so.  We contemplate the painting within the confines of a gallery or museum fully aware that we are not in the artwork itself, but rather looking at an artwork on a wall with one eye, while always being aware of the environment shared with that artwork.  The people milling around, the choice of shoes they have made or perhaps we are distracted by something so benign as the annoying pitch of a persons voice nearby.  In these spaces we share our focus with a variety of other distracting things beyond the smiling Mona Lisa.  And at no point do we expect to turn and see who Mona is speaking to nor would we contemplate walking up the hill that stretches behind her.  There is a barrier to immersion which we accept and expect.
Perhaps later we go to a cinema to see a movie.  The screen is massive taking up almost all our view with just the exit sign in our peripheral vision.  The lights go dark and we are expected to be silent.  Distractions have been greatly eliminated, we don't see people around us in the darkness outside the narrative, the excessively loud volume prevents us from hearing sounds that don't belong in the narrative around us.  It is no longer a static image but rather a work with duration.  A great story with great actors can create a deep level of immersion under these circumstances.  But there is still a flaw, in my opinion anyway, and that is we are passive observers being told a story.  We are still separate.  If we come to the same movie tomorrow it will be exactly the same story with the same camera movement which we are unable to break free from.  If we see a mossy stone off to the side of the narrative we can not wrestle free from the scripted nature of the camera movement and observe the stone more closely.  We can not turn the rock over and watch the centipedes scurry for cover.  We are observers but not active participants to the artwork.  My goals have always been about trying to create that next stage to immersion within a multi-user environment.  I want to create an artwork which immerses the viewer, yet allows you to make decisions within an open ended environment.  The next few posts will take you through the two stories

Imogen and Kumiko part one

When you arrived at Imogen and the Pigeons it was to a desolate landscape of collapsed buildings and dormant nuclear silos.  A decayed sign above some rubble read "Rebirth Life Encryption" and inside were several rusted hulks of what appeared to be devices used to save ones consciousness or memories digitally onto a device.  As you walked through what was left of the facility you discover one final working machine whose wheels still slowly revolve.  If you looked inside there was a nameplate fallen down, indicating that the memory stored, of that last human, was of a person named Imogen.  Beside Imogen's machine stood a rusted and worn Singbot resembling a WWII singer named Vera Lynn.  Here she still remained, singing to the last vestige of her final  job as was her programming.
From here we enter the memories of Imogen as stored on the machine.  We come first to an asylum with a variety of rooms all housing characters who are aspects of Imogen's personality, and eventually we come to Imogen's room itself from where she watches pigeons outside her window each day.
She sees them not as a pest nor vermin as society does, but rather as a family of sorts whose soft cooing calms her.  In her mental state it is what she desires most, she believes, erringly, that if only she could join them all her sorrows would dissipate with the closeness they would provide.  She determines to camouflage herself and join them on the wires, and it is at this point that Imogen first begins to rewrite or edit her memories as stored on the machine.
For the crux of translating memories into a digital format of zeroes and ones is that it was now possible to edit that which was previously untouchable.. a memory.  The question now is whether, morally, it is acceptable to change how a life unfolds.  To delete sadness in order to rewrite an outcome that was part of living.  Must we have sorrows and trials in life in order to allow happiness to exist?  Can happiness exist if there is nothing contrasting to compare it to?  For example, if we no longer understood sadness, if it was an obsolete emotion, then would joy cease to exist as well, seeing as it may need the contrast of sadness to have a reference point.  Would it improve a life or simply create a continuous bland one?  That is the question I wonder about.

Kumikos book on Whales
Imogen leaves her bed and goes on a journey collecting pigeon feathers from which to fashion a costume that she believes will fool the pigeons into accepting her as one of them.  On her bed rests two books.  Both can also be found strewn on the road by Kumikos torn backpack.  Imogen keeps them near.
Imogens bed with books
Sewing a dress
Imogen first finds her sewing machine and fashions a dress in greys, then walks the heights of a building collecting feathers for a shawl.  She then goes to a beauty salon and burns the feathers into her hair.  Her disguise seemingly complete she then has an unwanted memory come to her.  It is of her kitchen in another life, and a floor strewn with blank paper all devoid of children's drawings except a final one held by a magnet to her refrigerator.  A sea of blank paper on the floor never to be drawn upon.

It is a painful memory from which she flees.  She rushes to the alleyway below where her window  lays
Flying
and climbs a telephone pole close to her pigeons on wire.  Naturally, not even remotely fooled, they startle and fly away at her approach as her dream is really just a lie she told herself, and now it was coming apart at the seams.  She jumps and for a moment is flying with them, then she falls to the street below, dying yet being reborn.
Ruth Etting Songbot
At this point she becomes stronger and more aware.  Joining the pigeons was just a fairy tale or fantasy she devised thinking it was what would be her salvation.  Imogen was never a strong person so she didn't first reach for that which she desired most.

Imogen now knew what she wanted and begins to craft a different ending to her recorded life.  She delves into her own digital memories and begins ripping and tearing them apart, sewing a new reality of sorts.  Her real memories warp or dissipate as she writes them into something new.

Hair salon
In the asylum, her psychologist had his patients raise and care for a monarch butterfly with the idea being that the wonder of metamorphosis could bring the patients out of their fugue state.  Imogen incorporates this experience into her new reality.

The final scene is of the whale from the cover of Kumikos book coming down from the sky gently carrying with it a Monarch pupa from which, through it translucent skin, can be seen the face of a baby.  Imogen reaches up joyfully to take her lost daughter to her breast and together they begin to live within this new memory fashioned by her.  Outside in the real world her machines wheels slowly turn as sand gradually build up around its flanks.  The Vera Lynnbot gently singing.

Fridge drawings
Now it is for the viewer to decide, if we could, should we edit our own memories if in doing so it creates a life of joy.  Are the events of our lives sacrosanct? Above change or interference? or is that line of thinking simply poetic nonsense.  If we have the power to change our lives into an ideal one with no sadness nor mistakes then why not use such technology?
Collecting feathers
With Imogen it has brought her contentment and joy, if she doesn't know that she had a previous life then did she?  Does the human race need failure or sadness in order to strive for success and happiness?
The symbolic code

In Imogen and the Pigeons we are introduced to the idea of the moral dilemma of editing ones memories combined with immortality.  For that was the eventual goal of Rebirth Life Encryption.  They saved memories digitally waiting for the day when the machines of the Singularity would devise a way for those lives to be installed into a new body. The precipice to immortality brought on from technology which, perhaps, was available to humanity before its communal maturity was prepared for it.  The Singularity, which I will explain in the next post, eventually allows for miraculous inventions to appear daily all created by AI, who do not evaluate their impact.

Auntie Ethels Strawberry* milkshakes
All my stories, from Condos in Heaven, The Rabbicorn, Anna's Many Murders and others to The Singularity of Kumiko all reside within the same narrative world.  In order to help create a unifying mood or explanation of this worlds society, I decided to narrate through its advertising.   For I believe you can really get a sense of a society by how it interprets its own people.  Many despise some forms of advertising and its insulting, shallow attempts to manipulate us, but then, there are many more who unwittingly shape their lives around it.

Pink Elly's Mood enhancers
One of the things I dislike is guilt advertising.  And not always in traditional forms of print but other methods such as, well.. for example here in Canada,  when you go to buy groceries or perhaps some other retail shop they often ask you, as you are about to pay, whether you would like to donate a $1 to feed children somewhere or to save abused animals and so on.  All things you would love to do.  If you say "no sorry I won't give a mere $1 to feed starving children" then well .. you are one evil mofo.  You can feel the judgement of the shoppers in line behind you with their squinty little eyes even if its just in your imagination.    So you give a dollar and then at the very next shopping stop someone wants you to donate $2 to stop a fucking Comet hurtling toward the Earth and you are like.. grrrr there better be a Comet!.. no wait.. I hope there isn't a comet.. no .. i don't know what I want but I probably should pay!

Retelevise
Anyway,  so what I wanted to do was create the advertising in a light hearted manner touching on some of these methods used, yet not preaching.  The underlying messages in some of the advertising is really not so humerus when it depicts the mentality of a society no too far removed from our own.  They can be a bit dark, but also mixed with humour.

So I will quickly explain a few starting at the top and moving down.

Auntie Ethel's Strawberry* Milkshakes:
The love angle, if you don't love Auntie Ethel's milkshakes then you don't really love your own aunt.   The "Strawberry" comes with a disclaimer symbol * which has a massive list of ingredients that create the taste of Strawberries without actually using any.  This is a real list of ingredients for an existing milkshake, I didn't make that part up.
Slinks Breathing Accessory

Test Monkey #4683

Power Pets

Slinks Shelterball
Duradent Tooth Spray
Pink Elly's Mood enhancers are anti-depressants paired with, and requiring, Television channels to trigger them.  They imply that those people who help you with your problems also pick them for themselves.  They must be OK then.  They actually used to have Doctors do that for old smoking adverts in magazines I have collected.

Retelevise is geared towards the idea of putting ones one desires to the forefront of life, and in this case using a 16 week program whose aim is to addict your child to the television thus freeing up your time to enjoy yourself.  I have literally waved my hand across the eyes of my brothers kids when watching Dora the Explorer with almost no effect on their hypnotic state.

In many of my adverts I have created a company called Slinks which provides a variety of these services.  This next one is the Slinks Breathing Accessory or also known as a gas mask.  They took the angle of taking a very disagreeable and scary requirement of going outside, and attempting to make it fashionable.  If the gas mask is needed due to a toxic environment or due to the possibility of a terrorist attack and so on, they don't want you to associate fear with the product.  So rather lets try and make it more like a purse or something fun.  Lets not make people think about the depressing reasons why they are needed, but rather camouflage the necessity into something they actually want to have with them.

Test Monkey # 4683 is kind of a silly one.  I once read the infinite monkey theorem which states that a monkey hitting keys at random on a typewriter keyboard for an infinite amount of time will eventually type a given text, such as the complete works of Charles Dickens or the Bible.  It plays on things like them claiming they knew TEST MONKEY #4683 was special .. yet despite this they didn't give him a proper name.  Essentially they had an idea that didn't come to fruition so they are attempting to recoup at least a bit of cost.  They creatively use large print at the bottom to suggest the New York Post liked the book whereas the small print accompanying it clarifies that the quote was actually for a different book altogether.   You should be able to click on these images to see them larger if the text is hard to read.

Zinger the Rocket Dog:   Zinger is a character whose story I have almost made a dozen times already only to push it back with each new build.  Zinger is an actual character who first popped up years ago in my artwork Condos in Heaven.  Mr Zippers (the murderous rabbit) is also a power pet.  The idea for Power Pets is that Slinks have found a way to "improve" the common pet surgically with technological advancements.  They have decided that the best way to market their product is by convincing people that normal animals, like a dog or fish are pretty predictable and lame pets.  PowerPets are instead super pets and claim to surpass previous incarnations like the Rabbicorn.

Also in this advert I mention "Scientypes" who often appear in these write ups.  I have always been a bit remiss in explaining my idea for what a Scientype is.  They are pseudo professionals.  People who pose for pictures in lab coats or by microscopes looking intent and intelligent yet are in fact actors.  A Scientype is a type of Scientist whose unofficial role is to reassure the public into thinking a product is supported and tested by a rather handsome and reliable professional.  It plays on the idea that if someone wears a lab coat in a picture then they must really be a Doctor or Scientist.  Slinks can't legally call them scientists so they made up a new word which was "Scientypes" and the population believes that they are a type of scientist rather than actors.  The idea being that any claims made by Scientypes are opinions masquerading as truths and should the unfortunate event of a lawsuit occur in regards to a product that Slinks offers, then they need only point out that their Scientypes make no claim of being professionals, it is in fact the public who have erringly assumed them to be authorities on the safety of the products offered.

The next invention is the Slinks Shelterball.  In this advert they take on the voice of a hip regular person who makes the case that they would prefer to be blown outside of a nuclear radiation zone by the explosion itself than be stuck in a bomb shelter inside the toxic area.  The Shelterball will only be demonstrated to work or not work in the advent of our worlds nuclear destruction, in which case they likely need not worry about their money back guarantee.

DuraDent Tooth Spray plays on the parents desire not to have to deal with tantrums and melt downs associated with depriving their children of those addictive things they love, which also happen to be terrible for them.  So for this they have a product which coats a child's teeth in a protective layer that prevents them from getting cavities from Soda Pop drinks.  So it bypasses the need for self restraint and ignores the other issues like filling up you kid with sugar and caffeine.  They are solely focused on cavities.  They also encourage you to believe your children will love you more should you use this product.  They also deflect the desire to know what Tar-O-Plast is made from.

Clone Star Body Banks keep an actual genetically enhanced clone of you at a location which can be harvested should you ever fall ill and require an organ or blood transfusion etc.  They actually encourage you to live extravagantly by smoking or whatever, because you now have spare parts.  They don't want you to sympathize with the clones nor even humanize them to any great extent, so they assure you that these clones are having a wonderful time waiting to be harvested.  They claim that your clone lives in a virtual paradise, mingling with the clones of Celebrities and such on an island called Partyville.  The small print does correct this though by stating the clones actually reside in vats, and that Partyville is a fictional location known internally as Clone Garden 46134A.

Positive news plus is a feature you can subscribe to which filters your daily media into news stories which can be more digestible than reality.  So your news feed can be all cat and puppy videos if you like or alternately a close representation of the state of the world.  I vaguely remember  being a young child and watching on the TV the bombing of Baghdad.  It was dubbed "Shock and awe" I seem to recall.  It was very confusing to me at the time as the commentators treated it almost as a spectacle similar to watching a fireworks show rather than the reality of it being a real time depiction of death and destruction.  I think there was actual footage taken from cameras mounted on precision bombs showing their approach and ending in static.   It was very much desensitizing something that really shouldn't be glossed over.  If a decision is made to destroy men, women, children, kittens, architecture and so on of another society, whether right or wrong, then the full implications of that decision should be shown accurately to its people so it is never misconstrued what the decision actually did.  When attempting to destroy an enemy then the elected officials naturally don't want you to associate with them on an emotional level to the extent that we contemplate that they also have adorable children, laughter and cats and dogs identical to our own. Seeing this on TV was what germinated the idea for Positive News Plus+ so long ago and to be honest the advent of instant, worldwide visual media which we have bombarding us daily may hasten this type of filter rather than prevent it.  But then again perhaps it will desensitize us to the extent its not required to filter.  Hard to say.  The next post will be on the Singularity of Kumiko.

The Singularity of Kumiko - an initial explanation

For the Singularity of Kumiko the guest was required to customize their viewer settings with which they use to interact with the virtual world.  Second Life is an open source platform and as such there are 3rd party viewers created with names such as Singularity (coincidence), Firestorm and others who have developed what they believe are the best settings for users to interact with Second Life.  There is also the default viewer created by Linden Lab (the creators of Second Life) which all new users begin with.  The virtual world viewers have a wide range of hidden abilities which the average user has no idea how to use.  After experimenting for a while in Firestorm viewer I was able to create a setting which allowed for the atmosphere to appear pitch dark, and within this environment I was able to create a working "flashlight".  This was essential because the viewer had to feel certain emotions when immersed in this narrative.  They had to feel at times lost, anxious and scared.  They had to be able to associate with Kumiko, for she also was confused and alone in the dark.  The complete darkness put many well outside of their comfort zone, but this was necessary and really, shouldn't art do that?
Projected light and shadows in darkness
The story of the Singularity of Kumiko was told through 14 letters shared between Kumiko and her love Iktomi.  They represented two distinct views on life.  The name Kumiko means endless beauty, while Iktomi is the spider God of technology and invention.  Within the story could be found bottles which held messages in the form of a USB stick, a rolled up note or alternately an antiquated microphone which had the voice of Kumiko narrating her responses to Iktomi.  Kumiko was humanized by using a real audio voice with emotion and inflection, while Iktomi always remained exclusively text. The 3D environment was created in such a way that the headlamp would, at times, stop working thus submerging the viewer in complete darkness, and only by walking toward a distant light, could they find their way.  Such times as these created great anxiety as there was a character named Mr Zippers, whose distorted protectionism of Kumiko was, in some cases, quite lethal.

What is lethal?  Well there is a rarely used feature in Second Life which allows the avatar to die.  I have been using this feature for a few years now as I believe, and hope, that it develops a deeper sense of immersion within my narratives as it creates a bit of anxiety.  Users of Second Life greatly associate with their avatars, there exists very deep emotional connections and reactions associated with what happens to their avatar.  If, for example, some stranger stands very close to you, nose to nose, many feel that sense of personal space being invaded and step back.  If someone barges past you, pushing you aside in a shop or somewhere, many can get angry at this treatment.  It is not uncommon for people to fall in love, with other minds, in virtual worlds.  It is a giant psychology experiment really, with few people paying attention to the results.  With this in mind, the death or danger to ones avatar can effectively be used to further immersion.

The final thing I wish to mention before next weeks post (or possibly in two weeks as I need to post about the Russian Avant Garde exhibit running at a museum in Moscow I am in that is just opening) is the concept behind the Singularity also known as the technological singularity. This is the idea that at some point in the future, computer artificial intelligence will surpass that possessed by the human race.  The consensus seems to be that this will happen around 2045 or so.  The idea is that humans would create a computer mind that grows or evolves exponentially.  The initial AI would  develop means to enhance itself and so would then be constantly improving on its original design, possibly exponentially.  So Imogen and the pigeons and the Singularity of Kumiko both are stories told during that time period.  With Kumiko life is essentially about playing.  Remarkable inventions are written about each day in their media but soon forgotten as newer and more impressive ones appear.  The memory encryption being one such remarkable invention that was just one of many created by the Singularity machine.
The human race becomes children of this machine, who in itself doesn't fully comprehend the fickle nature of its creators.  It begins by developing inventions for humanity and its decisions initially reflect that it is still close to the original product programmed for humanity, yet with each new iteration of itself that it creates, it becomes more and more distanced from the wants and desires of people.  In the end, as we see in the desolate landscape for Imogen and the pigeons, it determines that the presence of the human race is counter productive to all other life forms on earth.
